Tasted this, the 12yo #37, at my recent visit to the Grenada Distillers Ltd (GDL) and also took a bottle with me home. In this case #37 stands for a celebration that the distillery has been operational since 1937. They use a John Dore Coffey twin-column still for their production. Nowadays, since the hurricane Ivan destroyed most of the sugarcane fields in 2004, they import molasses for the production. It’s double matured, it was first aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon oak barrels, then blended, and finally the blend was filled back into oak to marry for another four years. Scents and flavors a very much alike the for the 8yo, but some of them are more accentuated. The nose is fruity, sweet and spicy with scents of caramel and vanilla. At the palate it’s balanced, smooth, fruity, spicy, woody and sweet with flavors of toffee, banana, raisin, apricot, oak and nutmeg. The finish is medium long, smooth and peppery.
