Port Mourant El Dorado Rare Collection PM 1997

Nose is dark and very wood and herbs forwards. Very interesting but also demanding. Same focus on the palate. However, nicely embedded in a vanilla/honey-like sweetness paying tribute to the long tropical aging.

The nose is greedy and sweet. The palate is heavy, dusty and coppery, with citrus fruits melted into precious wood.

26.10.2025 Part 1 Today we have an El Dorado Rare Cask online tasting and I've been looking forward to it. I will keep the score and just enjoy the rums and I have all of them on my shelves as well. ---------------- The nose has better balance than the 1999 version of this great rum. All in all a very well balanced edition well worth the price tag.

Today, Port Mourants has been around for what feels like an eternity. El Dorado 1997: Delicious Port Mourant with the typical aroma profile. Very pleasing, alcohol perfectly integrated, very drinkable. It lacks a little complexity. 85 pts. El Dorado 1999: A little more closed than its brother from 1997, the alcohol is not as well integrated. I had hoped for more here. 80 pts. Tamosi Karaya 1998: Great stuff! With the typical Port Mourant aromas that take root in its complexity and expand aroma-wise. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and pleasant, the alcohol is excellently integrated. 90pts.

Edit: Yesterday again with DomM in the glass and a Ramón Allones 90 ANIVERSARIO SR. HENRY Edición Regional Exclusivo Alemania 2020 to go with it. Had to adjust upwards. Kick-off RumX Advent calendar 2023. What a start. Thanks to the organization team. Takes a while in the glass, but once it has developed... Delicious You really have to say that all these El Dorado bottlings are very good, there isn't really a bad one.

Had thought at first that will again so a Port mourant which is too herbal and smoky for me but this one has a nice grape and passion fruit note in the background and rather the tannins of good black tea than of too much wood. Nice number! My favorite Port mourant will still not 😅🤷🏼♂️

Great nose with lovely traits, but the palate is very intense - bitter-bitter spiciness, old wood, subtle smoky aromas...Port Mourant extreme, but from my perspective without the perfectly balanced complexity that characterizes the really great Demeraras.

Rumx Advent 30.11.23 Had something of a matured agricole for me blind. Very strong with spice, oak, tobacco. Something earthy, yet fresh. Expressively fruity on the nose. Woody depth paired with tropical maturity. Only the alcoholic spiciness in the mouth is off-putting. I guessed one of the Les Ephemeres series from Saint James. Edit: needs a lot of time in the glass, then the flavor profile unfolds more and more. The nose is excellent.

Another pearl from El Dorado. A round and complex nose that is hard to get away from and is the highlight. Intense licorice in the mouth, dark, tart, spicy, bitter and herbal (tea!). The fruit is rather weak and can be associated with dried fruit, which you have to like. Beautiful rum with a clear influence from the Wooden Stills.

Very tasty Port Mourant in my opinion. Comparatively little herbal and medicinal notes, but overall very harmonious and round. Nevertheless, nice PM profile, with neat and pleasant woodiness. Like many El Dorado Rares top quality for good money. I like it very much!

The nose is mainly woody and caramel. Solvents and pungent spices. It's greedy and appetizing. On the palate, lots of wood. Too much, surely. A bitterness heightened by orange zest. Woody, bitter finish.

The nose I find very good, but on the palate dominate a little too much wood, vinegar, leather, licorice. Unfortunately, the fruitiness of the normal PM97 is missing.

The Rare Collection has really excellent bottlings with now very good PLV.Nose: full-bodied, elegant and round. Spicy-fruity-caramel. Overall dark and malty with dried orange, dried black currant and sulfured raisins. Also vanilla, dark maple syrup, some licorice and soft licorice and cream toffee. The 20 years have produced a beguiling nose. 90Palate: intense, elegant and balanced. Spicy-woody without the wood being too strong. Toasty, salty and burnt at first, then anise, licorice and a hint of mint. Seems slightly bacony with umami and fat pecan. Fine orange peel still comes in the back. The 20 years also makes a very good impression on the palate. 89

RumX-Adventskalender 2023 "Prelude" (30.11.2023) Blind immerhin auf alten PM getippt, aber erst nach langer Zeit im Glas. Vorher hat sich der Rum chamäleonartig verändert und damit einer Zuordnung lange entzogen. Am Ende blieb aber doch das typische nass-schwere Holz. Wird mit zunehmender Verweildauer im Glas immer besser.

Compared to the El Dorado Rare Collection Port Mourant 1999, it is clearly ahead for me. For me, the 1997 is simply rounder, fuller, darker, more interesting. Unfortunately, the prices are now slowly rising ... as with the whole Rare Collection.
